Completing an undergraduate degree at Walter Sisulu University or anywhere else and deciding to go further is a different kind of decision. Postgraduate study means independent research, professional specialisation, and in many cases, the beginning of an academic or research career.

The WSU postgraduate application process is meaningfully different from the undergraduate application process. APS scores and matric results are irrelevant at this level. What matters is your undergraduate performance, your research direction, and, for Master’s and doctoral programmes, your relationship with a potential supervisor.

Each level requires completion of the previous level. You cannot apply for a Master’s without an Honours degree (or equivalent), and you cannot apply for a PhD without a Master’s degree.

Advanced Diplomas are one-year NQF Level 7 qualifications designed for graduates who have completed a relevant three-year NQF Level 6 diploma and want to deepen their specialisation.

NQF Level 6 qualification with 360 credits in a cognate discipline with an achievement of not less than 60% average for the qualification.

For Mechanical Engineering specifically, applicants must also have passed Applied Strength of Materials III, Steam Plant III, Hydraulic Machines III, and Mathematics III in their undergraduate diploma.
