WSU Postgraduate Application 2027 – How to Apply for Honours, Masters, and PhD

WSU Postgraduate Application

Completing an undergraduate degree at Walter Sisulu University or anywhere else and deciding to go further is a different kind of decision. Postgraduate study means independent research, professional specialisation, and in many cases, the beginning of an academic or research career.

The WSU postgraduate application process is meaningfully different from the undergraduate application process. APS scores and matric results are irrelevant at this level. What matters is your undergraduate performance, your research direction, and, for Master’s and doctoral programmes, your relationship with a potential supervisor.

This guide covers every postgraduate qualification category at WSU, the official admission requirements confirmed from the WSU Postgraduate Brochure, what competitors consistently get wrong about the postgraduate process, and the funding options available to WSU postgraduate students in 2027.

This guide is based on the official Walter Sisulu University Postgraduate and Senior Student Information Brochure, the WSU General Prospectus postgraduate rules, and WSU’s official postgraduate studies page. All requirements are verified from official sources.

The WSU postgraduate application covers Honours, Advanced Diplomas, Master’s, and PhD programmes across all faculties. The closing date is 30 September 2026 for Health Sciences postgraduate programmes and 31 October 2026 for all other faculties. Masters and PhD applicants must contact a potential supervisor before applying. Applications can be submitted online at www.wsu.ac.za or manually to the Office of the Registrar.

Before covering individual programmes, here is a clear framework of what each postgraduate level represents at WSU:

Level

NQF

What It Is

Minimum Entry

Advanced Diploma

7

Specialisation after a diploma

Relevant NQF Level 6 diploma with 60% average

Honours Degree

8

Postgraduate specialisation after a bachelor’s degree

Relevant bachelor’s degree with strong academic performance

Each level requires completion of the previous level. You cannot apply for a Master’s without an Honours degree (or equivalent), and you cannot apply for a PhD without a Master’s degree.

WSU Postgraduate Application

This is the most important logistical fact for postgraduate applicants and the one most often missed:

The completed form must be sent to the Office of the Registrar at Walter Sisulu University on or before 30 September for the Faculty of Health Sciences, and on or before 31 October for other faculties, to be enrolled in the following year.

Faculty

Postgraduate Closing Date

Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences

30 September 2026

All other faculties

31 October 2026

A late application fee will be charged for applications received after the closing date. This is different from undergraduate applications, where late submissions are simply rejected. For postgraduate applications, WSU may consider late submissions with an additional fee, but this is at the institution’s discretion and not guaranteed.

WSU accepts both online and manual (hardcopy) applications for postgraduate programmes.

Online Applications

The primary online postgraduate application portal is separate from the undergraduate portal: applications.wsu.ac.za

Register and log in, select your postgraduate programme, complete the application form, and upload your supporting documents.

Manual Applications

Applications for admission must be made on the prescribed form, completed in detail and signed by the prospective student. The completed form must be sent to the Office of the Registrar at Walter Sisulu University before the relevant closing date.

Application forms can be obtained from the Registrar’s Office at any WSU campus or downloaded from www.wsu.ac.za.

Postgraduate-Specific Documents Required

Unlike undergraduate applications, postgraduate applicants need considerably more documentation:

  • Certified copy of South African ID or passport
  • Full academic transcripts of all modules from your previous degree(s), certified
  • Certified proof of degree conferred your degree certificate
  • Research proposal (for research Master’s and PhD applications, see the section below)
  • Proof of contact with a potential supervisor (for research, Master’s and PhD)
  • SAQA evaluation for international qualifications
  • English proficiency proof (IELTS or TOEFL) for some postgraduate programmes for international students
  • Curriculum Vitae (recommended for research programmes)

Advanced Diplomas are one-year NQF Level 7 qualifications designed for graduates who have completed a relevant three-year NQF Level 6 diploma and want to deepen their specialisation.

The 60% Rule for Advanced Diplomas

The consistent admission requirement across all WSU Advanced Diploma programmes is:

NQF Level 6 qualification with 360 credits in a cognate discipline with an achievement of not less than 60% average for the qualification.

This applies regardless of which Advanced Diploma you are applying for. The 60% average must be across your undergraduate diploma, not just in one or two subjects. Some programmes also require 60% specifically in the major subjects.

For applicants who did not achieve 60% but have two or more years of relevant work experience, WSU allows a panel review the application is reviewed by a panel to determine whether admission can be granted based on experiential learning.

Honours programmes at WSU provide an opportunity to specialise in a particular area of an undergraduate degree, complete a short research project, and gain a postgraduate qualification that opens the door to Master’s study.

General admission requirement: A relevant bachelor’s degree at NQF Level 7, with strong academic performance in the major subjects.

Different faculties at WSU set their own specific Honours entry requirements. A standard threshold used across South African universities is 60% in the major at third-year level, and this is broadly what WSU faculties apply, though exact requirements vary by department and programme.

Available Honours programmes include:

Bachelor of Administration Honours (BAdmin Hons)

  • Faculty of Management and Public Administration Sciences, Butterworth Campus
  • Requirement: NQF Level 7 qualification in a cognate discipline with not less than 60% in the majors and an average of 60% for the qualification
  • Duration: 1 year (120 credits)

BCom Honours in Economics

  • Faculty of Economic and Financial Sciences, Mthatha Campus
  • Requirement: Relevant BCom or equivalent degree, 60% or above in Economics at final year level

Other Honours programmes are available in Nursing, Natural Sciences, Education, Law, and Social Sciences. Contact the relevant faculty directly to confirm current availability and specific entry requirements for each programme.

For Master’s full-time students, the minimum period of study is one year and the maximum period is four years. For Master’s part-time students, the minimum period is two years and the maximum is five years.

General admission requirement: A relevant Honours degree or equivalent NQF Level 8 qualification with an average of not less than 60%.

For the Master of Medicine programmes, only full-time study is permissible.

For Doctoral full-time students, the minimum period of registration is two years and the maximum period is five years. For Doctoral part-time students, the minimum period is three years and the maximum period is seven years.

General admission requirement: A relevant Master’s degree in a cognate discipline.

Available doctoral programmes at WSU include:

  • Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Health Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences
  • Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Natural Sciences, Faculty of Natural Sciences
  • Doctor of Education (DEd), Faculty of Education

PhD and DEd programmes require a completed Master’s degree and a clear research proposal. WSU does not admit doctoral students without a defined supervisor and a viable research direction.

This is the aspect of the WSU postgraduate application that most competitor guides either skip or explain incorrectly.

For research-based Master’s and all doctoral programmes at WSU, the supervisor relationship is not an administrative formality; it is a foundational requirement. You cannot successfully apply for a research degree without having identified a potential supervisor.

Master’s and PhD applicants usually need a research proposal and a possible supervisor matching. Check faculty pages for research focus areas. If you are applying for a research master’s or PhD, start early: contacting potential supervisors before applying can strengthen your application.

How to Find a Supervisor at WSU

  • Step 1: Identify your research area: Before contacting anyone, know what you want to research. Your research proposal needs a clear topic, a research question, and an indication of methodology. A vague “I want to study education” is not a research topic.
  • Step 2: Check faculty and departmental pages: WSU’s faculty websites list academic staff, their qualifications, and in some cases, their research interests. Find a staff member whose research aligns with your proposed topic.
  • Step 3: Contact the potential supervisor directly: Send a short, professional email introducing yourself, your qualifications, your proposed research topic, and a brief outline of what you want to investigate. Attach your academic transcript and a one-page research concept note.
  • Step 4: Confirm supervisor availability: A supervisor who is already supervising several students may not have the capacity to take on a new student. Ask directly whether they are available to supervise a new Master’s or PhD student for the 2027 intake.
  • Step 5: Obtain written support: Some WSU programmes require a letter from your intended supervisor confirming their willingness to supervise your project. Include this in your application documentation.

A research proposal for a Master’s or doctoral application is not the same as an undergraduate assignment. It is a structured document that demonstrates you have thought through your research direction before beginning.

A standard WSU research proposal for postgraduate admission typically includes:

  • Title: A clear, specific research title
  • Background and Problem Statement: Why this topic matters and what problem it addresses
  • Research Questions or Objectives: What you specifically aim to find out
  • Literature Review Summary: Evidence that you have read the existing research in your field
  • Proposed Methodology: How you plan to gather and analyse data
  • Significance of the Study: What contribution will your research make
  • Timeline: A realistic schedule for completion within WSU’s registration periods
  • References: Key sources you have already consulted

For doctoral applications, the research proposal is expected to be substantially more detailed than for a Master’s application. Some faculties also require a motivation letter alongside the proposal.

NSFAS does not cover postgraduate study. This is a common misconception. NSFAS funding applies to undergraduate qualifications at public universities only.

NRF (National Research Foundation) Funding

The DSTI-NRF Postgraduate Student Funding is the primary national funding mechanism for South African postgraduate students. The NRF minimum academic requirement for postgraduate funding is 65% for the previous degree.

Key points about NRF funding for 2027:

  • Applications are submitted directly through the NRF portal at www.nrf.ac.za
  • Successful applicants are funded either at Full Cost of Study (FCS) or Partial Cost of Study (PCS)
  • Full Cost of Study is awarded to South African citizens and permanent residents who are financially needy (household income below R350,000 per year), living with a disability, or exceptional academic achievers
  • Honours General Scholarships for 2027 opened in July 2026
  • Master’s and doctoral funding applications open separately. Check the NRF website for current deadlines

WSU Institutional Bursaries

WSU offers a limited number of institutional bursaries for postgraduate students, particularly for research-based programmes. Contact the WSU Research Office or the specific faculty’s postgraduate coordinator for details on availability and application requirements.

NRFF, DAAD, and Other External Bursaries

Additional funding sources for WSU postgraduate students include:

  • DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service): The NRF-DAAD In-Country Scholarship funds Master’s and PhD degrees at South African universities for South African citizens
  • Sector SETAs: Some Sector Education and Training Authorities offer bursaries for postgraduate study in specific fields
  • Industry sponsorship: Particularly relevant for professional postgraduate programmes like the MPA and MCom

Part-Time Study as a Funding Strategy

WSU allows part-time study at the master’s and doctoral levels. Many WSU postgraduate students fund their studies through employment while studying part-time. The extended registration periods (up to 5 years for a part-time Master’s, 7 years for a part-time PhD) make this a viable strategy for students who cannot access full bursary funding.

After submitting your postgraduate application, the process differs from undergraduate applications in one important way: faculty review is more intensive.

For coursework Honours and Advanced Diploma applications, the process is similar to undergraduate review, where your academic record is assessed against the minimum requirements and available spaces.

For research-based Master’s and PhD applications, the process involves:

  • Initial academic screening by the faculty
  • Review of your research proposal by the relevant department
  • Confirmation of supervisor availability
  • Faculty Postgraduate Committee review and recommendation
  • Formal offer of admission

This process takes longer than undergraduate admissions. Apply early, especially for research degrees, where supervisor matching adds additional time to the review process.

Track your WSU application status at: https://status.wsu.ac.za/status/statuscheck.php

A graduate from WSU’s Faculty of Education completes her BEd Senior Phase Teaching in 2025 with a 68% average. She applies for Honours in Education Management for the 2027 intake.

For her Honours application, she submits her full academic transcript showing 68% and confirms her degree has been conferred. She is admitted to the Honours programme at Komani Campus.

During her Honours year, she develops a research interest in teacher professional development in rural Eastern Cape schools. She identifies a WSU Education professor whose published work covers this area, contacts him in April 2026, and receives confirmation that he is willing to supervise her Master’s.

She submits her Master’s application with a five-page research proposal in September 2026, before the 31 October deadline and includes the supervisor’s written confirmation. By January 2027, she received an offer for the MEd research programme starting in February 2027.

The research proposal and supervisor contact made the difference. Applications for research degrees without either rarely succeed.

Health Sciences postgraduate programmes close 30 September 2026. All other faculties close on 31 October 2026. A late application fee is charged for submissions after these dates.

Yes. For research-based Master’s and all doctoral programmes, identifying a supervisor and including their written support significantly strengthens your application. Some faculties require supervisor confirmation before an offer is made.

A minimum of 60% average in your relevant NQF Level 6 diploma. Some programmes also require 60% specifically in major subjects. Applicants with two or more years of relevant experience but below 60% may be considered through a panel review.

No. NSFAS only covers undergraduate qualifications. Postgraduate funding comes from the NRF, institutional bursaries, industry sponsorship, or self-funding.

Most WSU faculties require approximately 60% across your undergraduate major subjects. Some programmes are competitive and may have a higher effective threshold based on available spaces.

Full-time: minimum 1 year, maximum 4 years. Part-time: minimum 2 years, maximum 5 years. For MMed programmes, only full-time study is permitted.

Full-time: minimum 2 years, maximum 5 years. Part-time: minimum 3 years, maximum 7 years.

Yes. WSU accepts postgraduate applications from graduates of other recognised South African and international universities. International qualifications must be evaluated by SAQA.

Visit WSU faculty websites to identify staff whose research aligns with your topic. Send a professional email introducing yourself, your proposed research, and your academic record. Confirm supervisor availability before submitting your application.

WSU charges R100 for undergraduate applications. For postgraduate applications, verify the current fee on the application portal. A late application fee is additionally charged for submissions after the closing date.

The WSU postgraduate application is not just a form; it is the beginning of a different kind of academic engagement. For Advanced Diplomas, the 60% average rule is straightforward. For Honours and coursework Master’s, academic performance in the relevant undergraduate degree determines eligibility. For research Master’s and PhD programmes, the supervisor relationship and the quality of your research proposal are as important as your academic record.

Apply before the relevant closing date. Health Sciences postgraduate programmes close 30 September 2026, one month earlier than the 31 October deadline for all other faculties.

If you are applying for a research degree, start the supervisor search process now, not in September. Finding the right supervisor, developing your research proposal, and confirming availability takes time. Applications for research degrees submitted without a confirmed supervisor rarely succeed.

And apply for NRF funding in parallel with your programme application. The minimum academic requirement for NRF postgraduate funding is 65% in the previous degree. Check whether your undergraduate average qualifies you before the funding window closes.

Apply online: applications.wsu.ac.za, WSU postgraduate studies page: www.wsu.ac.za/en/research-innovation/post-graduate-studies-at-wsu, Apply for NRF funding: www.nrf.ac.za, Track your application: status.wsu.ac.za
